I miss the azure sea, the warmth and the beautiful sun of Rhodes.

Coming back from New York, where the sky was beautifully blue, and after spending a few days in France, where spring had almost begun, I am back in Poland, where snow piles up for tens of centimeters. The street lamp in front of my house is also giving under the onslaught of wind and snow.

Rhodes and a stay in all inclusive hotel.

It was my first all inclusive trip, which lasted one week. Hotel Royal Lindos: 2 swimming pools, 3 tennis courts, 3 restaurants. Their biggest attraction is a hotel-owned small bay, however, a little too concrete as for my taste. But at night, nobody comes there, so you can enjoy a good night swim. I guess all inclusive is just not my cup of tea. Do I like spending time with the overjoyed and noisy tourists? – No, thank you, not at the moment. I quickly felt trapped in the hotel, because I hate fixed schedules (except for the ones arranged on my own). When there is plenty of food, the quality decreases. I enjoyed pizza and grill, however, I have eaten Pizza numerous times during my student years, so I’m slightly fed up with it. Excess isn’t good.

Sitting and sunbathing by the swimming pool for a few hours like some sausage definitely isn’t for me. I’m not a good actor. I came out badly in the role of the sausage on a grill. By sitting by the swimming pool, you also run a risk of eyeing accidentally another girl. And consequently, of having an argument with your girlfriend. It would be totally rude of me, so i didn’t even dare. What is more, I prefer the Aegean Sea, the clear water without chlorine. At least you can’t drown, you swim among the fish and that’s what I love. The temperature of water is ideal at the end of September.

Unfortunately, playing volleyball barefoot (which I strongly don’t recommend) resulted in a few blisters, burns and bleeding (when I play, I always want to win and I quickly find myself immersed in the game), which put an end to my desires for the adventure. I had planned to hike Mount Attavyros which is 1215m high. After the volleyball match – I couldn’t. Nevertheless, I recommend this beautiful trail.

I was told that the view on the rest of the island from the mountain is breathtaking! When you’re sweating in the sun with every painful step you take, the view of the waves washing violently against the rocks is enjoyable and gives some rest even to someone as impatient as me. My excursions were limited. A few hours walking around the small town of Lindos and a small bus trip to Rhodes before the departure.

Lindos

I recommend you to get lost in the shadow of its narrow, winding streets, when the sun is too bothersome. Sit back and watch the flow of passersby, with a drink or a cigarette in your hand. I also recommend to walk to the Acropolis an hour before it closes, in order to admire the view of the sunset over the city. Imagine that the first human presence in this place dates back to the 4th millennium BC! Greeks, Romans, Templars, Muslims – all of them have inhabited this island. I admire the view. The same one those men saw 6000 years before me. Were they also contemplating the beautiful nature or were they more concerned about how they would fill their bellies the following day? It’s a mystery. I would opt for the latter.

While I was seating and complaining like an old man, I was watching the horizon. I saw some great boats slalomimg between far away islands. There are some advantages for those lazy ones, who take part in beautiful, relaxing cruises on the Mediterranean sea. I envy them a little.

At least, the landscape from the boat changes, you sail and you can enjoy every stopover. My uncle invited me for such cruise in April, but not on a ferry. On a boat that faces the waves in constant jolting and on which we must be ready to respond to  firm and dry orders of the Captain. It’s a completely different atmosphere. I hope I won’t be seasick for too long. But a thought of me having to act like a real sailor fills me with motivation. Even if it’ll be difficult. Being a man is like scrubbing the deck of your dreams, so that it shines in the sun.

Winter and cold last too long. I dream of midnight swims in the golden sea. Of dark, deep and warm water, which would wrap me in the solitude of the moment. I dream of facing the fear of darkness that grabs you with whereas the distant shore that shines brightly in the horizon.

I miss touching the sand with my bare feet. The feeling of hot, puckish grains of the sand that slip between my toes and massage delightfully. This warm and delicate soil. Warm but not too hot, just how you need it to be. I tried to do the same with snow, but the result is definitely not the same.
